The 2019 Cycleland Speedway Season is underway and our defending Track Champion in the Open Class has continued his domination into the 2019 season as he has now picked up back to back wins in the Jim Shirley Memorial and Points Race #1.
Schmitz took most of the winter off from racing and picked up right where he left off as he cruised to his 11th Career Victory at the Cycleland Speedway on Saturday night. Casey is now tied with Tyler McCain and Holly Shelton for 7th All Time in Open Main Event Wins at Cycleland. Schmitz was followed across the Finish Line by Red Bluff, CA driver Brandon LaChance in his #9B machine. LaChance is still in search of his first career Cycleland Win and if he continues to put himself in good positions it’s only a matter of time before he breaks through. Carson Sousa crossed the line in the third position, while other young drivers Carsen Perkins and Daniel Whitley rounded out the Top Five Finishers.
In other action throughout the night, we saw Jaxon Coughlin score his first career Cycleland Win in the Box Stock Class. He dominated the Main Event in his #84 kart. He was followed across the stripe by Jim Shirley Memorial Winner Chevy Schroer in second. While the #55B of Jett Barnes rounded out the podium with a third place effort.
In the Intermediate Class Rylinn Renaud put together a flawless Main Event as he took the lead in the later stages and held off a late charge from Dominic Gorden to get the victory in his #16 kart. Gorden had to settle for a second place finish. Jennifer Osborne impressed everyone by leading laps throughout the race and finishing on the podium in the third position. She has been making gains quickly in the Intermediate Class. Look for her to be up front much of the year!
The Open Intermediate Main Event came down to a thrilling final lap between Trace Adams and Carsen Perkins. A yellow flag flew with one lap remaining, which set up a final lap restart. When the Green flew, Perkins protected the bottom in Turns 1 & 2 while Adams banged the right rear off the cushion. Adams had a ton of momentum down the back straightaway and drove to the inside of Perkins entering Turn 3. Perkins tried to react and block the move but it was too late. Adams completed the pass off Turn 4 to pick up the Main Event Victory. Carsen Perkins would finish a bittersweet second. Nate Jones kept his momentum rolling. After winning the Jim Shirley Memorial, he backed that up with another podium finish, crossing the line in the third spot.
In the Sportsman Class, Demo Mittry kept his win streak going. He has now won the last four Main Events in the Sportsman Class dating back to the end of last season. Jesse Olson piloted his Cosmic Roots Ranch #05 to a career best second place finish. While Fastest Qualifier Kevin Hartnett rounded out the podium with a Third Place effort in his #42 kart.
We will be back in action this Saturday Night with Points Race #3. Hot Laps are scheduled to begin at 4:30PM with Qualifying and Racing action to immediately follow. For ticket information and/or directions to the track please visit our website at www.cyclelandspeedway.com
