Evan Burrola has had an excellent season so far in 2017 at the Cycleland Speedway. He leads all drivers at the racetrack with 8 Heat Race Victories this season. With those Heat Race wins, that means he has been starting up front in the Main Events, making things a little easier on himself when the green flag drops.
Burrola started on the front row this week alongside Polesitter Tyler Matheny. The two would drag race to the first corner. Burrola got there first by a nose and was able to take away the bottom line in turns one and two. Burrola would go on to lead all 20 Laps in the Main Event, but it wasn’t as easy as it sounds. Last week’s Main Event Winner Carson Sousa hounded him over the last 10 laps of the race, doing everything he could to get by the #21E of Burrola. He never quite could find a way around though and he would have to settle for a second-place finish in his #01 kart. Carsen Perkins made just his fifth start of the 2017 season in his Nu-Way Market #35 kart. Perkins put together a solid evening as he picked up his fourth top five finish of the season by way of crossing the line in the third position. After winning his Heat Race and starting on the Pole of the Main Event, Tyler Matheny would fall in line in the fourth position and that is where he finished in the Ed Brown Trucking #27T kart. Kaiden Butler had a good points night as he gained on the top two in the standings after they both had issues in the Main Event. Butler would cross the line in the fifth position for his ninth top five finish of the season. Carsen Perkins was the Hard Charger of the Main Event as he started in the ninth position and passed six karts en route to his third-place finish.
With one lap to go in the Main Event it looked as though Raymond Baldez was poised to gain some points on Preston Carr in the Championship chase, but coming off of turn four to take the white flag Baldez got tangled up with another car and spun to a stop. That allowed Preston Carr, who had an off night, go by and gain points on the #68B of Baldez. Preston Carr now holds a 34-point advantage over Raymond Baldez with just five races remaining. Kaiden Butler gained on both drivers in the standings, as he now sits 110 points behind Carr in the third position. Tyler Matheny is fourth in the standings, 244 points out of the top spot. While Jack Phillips is currently fifth in the standings at 265 points out of the lead.
We will be back in action at the Cycleland Speedway this Saturday night, August 5th for Points Race #15 of the 2017 race season. Hot Laps for the Open Karts are scheduled to hit the track at 5:30 with qualifying for all divisions to follow immediately.
