If there’s one class we have seen dominated in 2017 at Cycleland it would be the Sportsman Class. Michael Helwig has been on a tear this season. Through 12 points races he has a worst finish of 3rd and now 10 Main Event Wins. He keeps telling me I’m going to jinx him by talking about it, but it’s hard not to when you see a performance like the one he has put up this season.
Michael Helwig started on the Pole for the 20 Lap Main Event and he never looked back as he led all 20 Laps en route to his 10th win of the season. Rudger Worley made his return to the Cycleland Speedway subbing for Brian Seim in the #20S kart. He tried to mount a charge late in the race but couldn’t quite get close enough to do anything with the #28M of Helwig. Worley would settle for a second-place finish. Matt Peacher hasn’t run the full season in 2017 but in the seven races he has competed in, he has now finished in the top five a total of five times. He crossed the line this week in the third position. Alec Justeson picked up his fifth top five of the season with a fourth-place run. Daniel Becker picked up his first top five finish of 2017 as he finished in the fifth position. Rob Renneberg was the Hard Charger of the race in the #3SR kart as he started in the 16th position and crossed under the Checkered Flag in the 11th position.
Through 12 points races, Michael Helwig has a strangle hold on the rest of the field as he holds a 168 point advantage over second place driver Shawn Fogarty. Brian Seim now sits in a tie for third with Leana Kenyon as they are both 179 points out of the lead. Kody Hunderman sits in the fifth position, 282 points out of the top spot.
Points Race #13 is on tap this Saturday night, July 22nd, 2017. Hot Laps for the Open cars are scheduled to hit the track at 5:30 PM. That will be followed immediately by Qualifying for all classes.
