Helwig Keeps On Rolling In The Sportsman Class, Notches Win Number Seven

Michael Helwig is one of the most consistent drivers in Outlaw Kart’s on the West Coast. He has proved that this season in the Sportsman Class. Thru nine races this season (including Jim Shirley Mem.) Helwig has an average Main Event finish of 1.4. He now has seven wins and two third place finishes in 2017.

Michael Helwig had to really work hard to earn the win tonight as he had Shawn Fogarty really give him a good run throughout the early part of the race. They exchanged sliders for a few laps before Helwig was able to get away a bit. Fogarty tried his best to hang with him but just couldn’t make anything else happen. After a rough start to the night, not getting a qualifying time in, Fogarty would come home second in the Main Event for his fifth top five of the season. Leana Kenyon continued her consistent season as she notched her seventh top five finish with a third place run. Alec Justeson came across the line in the fourth position in the #42J. While Chad Duprey was the Hard Charger of the Main Event as he charged from his 18th starting position to finish in the fifth spot. It was a great drive for the driver out of Highlands Ranch, Colorado.

The night began with 21 karts signing into the pit area for the night’s action packed event. Brian Seim scored his second Fast Time in three races with a lap of 11.473 seconds in his Brian Seim Designs #20S kart.

Heat Race competition saw Josh Young score his fifth Heat Race Win of the season in the first Heat Race. Young leads all drivers at Cycleland Speedway this season in Heat Race Victories. Mike Moore won the second and final Heat Race. It was his fourth Heat Race Win of 2017 in the Moore Performance Engines #16B.

Trophy Dash competition saw Michael Helwig score his fourth Trophy Dash Win of the season, and promptly hand the trophy off to his father Alan as a Father’s Day gift. Michael is not only a great driver on the racetrack but he is a stand-up guy off the track as well. Through all of his continued success he continues to stay humble and gracious each and every day.

Thru eight points races Michael Helwig holds a commanding 137-point lead over new second place driver Leana Kenyon. Kenyon moved past Shawn Fogarty who came into the race second in the standings. Fogarty now sits third on the charts, 144 points out of the lead. Brian Seim currently sits fourth in the standings. He is 185 points out of the top spot, while Kody Hunderman rounds out the top five in fifth. He sits 189 points out of the lead.
